Mr Kerr, member for Waimea, is (says the correspondent of a contemporary) nothing if not exact. During the discussion on the Oamaru Harbor Board Loan Bill in committee, Mr Kerr had in a series of gesticulatory interjections, denounced the practice of Government advancing money for any purpose whatever out of the trust funds of the colony. Mr Marchant, in the course of a speech, proceeded to read from a Blue Book a list of works which had been constructed with the assistance Jof trust (funds. Work after work was enumerated, and presently the Waimea railway, £45,000, was mentioned. The witi of the House turned upon Mr Kerr an indignant and, in view of his recent protestations, an enquiring gaze, whilst those nearest the unfortunate member, in terms audible io the gallery, stigmatised such conduct as he was guilty of as contemptible. Lashed in a moment into a small fury, protesting that the return quoted was not correct, Mr rose from his seat, walked across the floor of the House to where Mr Marchant stood, and with the words “ Here let’s have a look at that thing,” held out his hand for the return, which after scanning for a moment or two gleefully returned to the member for Taranaki with the words “ Y a b that’s not my Waimea,” and stalked back to his seat amidst the shrieks of the House.
