THE GREAT STRIKES.
.THE PRESENT STATE OF THINGS. MRS GLADSTONE’S ACTIVITY. THE INTERVENTION OF THE LORD MAYOR. CHECKMATING THE SHIPPERS. London, Sept 5. There is little change to report, the condition of things being so unsettled that entering into details is almost unnecessary. There are many indications of matters being satisfactorily adjusted between the wharf laborers, but this does not alter the position in regard to the dock companies. Lord Mayor Whitehead will mediate between the men and the dock companies. The steamer Fifeshire is half unloaded, but only a small portion of the Kaikoura’s cargo has been taken out. The departure of the steamer Tainui has been postponed indefinitely. Mrs Gladstone has been visiting the homes cf the strikers, and has subscribed to the funds, which are daily increasing in amount. Mr Burns says that the strike at Liverpool will counteract the prospect of sending goods from London for shipment there, snd also at Glasgow, and that similar steps will be taken at Southampton if necessary. Canon Holland, and Revs. Mason and Lester who are among the leading clergy of the East End of London, sent letters of [sympathy to the strikers. Fifteen thousand pickets are distributed about the docks.
Wellington, last night. Several Trades Unions have resolve! to contribute towards the London strike funds. Auckland, last night. The Knights of Labor have opened subscriptions in aid of the London dock strikers.
