Tirailleur, Kotuku, Partner, Strephon, Dauphine, Scots Grey, Omaha, Tit, Lady Florin, Leopold, Corunna, Prince of Wale*, Fabulous, Whisper, Cyclone, Lady Norah, Thyme, and Tongariro. Flying Handicap, cf 75 bovs ; 6 furlongs:— Re&ata, Kotuku, Strephon, Mau Friday, Tutanekai, Dauphine, Watorbaby, Omaha, Tit, Lady Florin, Corunna, Fusee, Whisper, Recluse, Cyclone, Leopold, Boulanger, Scots Grey, and Tongariro,
A London cablegram received yesterday states that Smith is willing to meet Slavia, under British rules, for £lOOO a side. For a footrace, to be run in Christchurch. 118 entries have been received. The Opotiki Herald states that there are several Opotiki horses in training for the coming races to be he'd at Gisborne. Nonsense and Dancing Master are among the number. The Haw’ke’s Bay Jockey Club’s race meeting will be the first held of any importance likely to give a key to the ultimate winner of the New Zealand Cup, more especially as among the entries will be found Scots Grey, who is at present first favorite. Gaine Carrington has again put Sailor into work, with a view of sending him for some of the events at the Spring Meeting. ft is stated that he is in the sale list ; if so, ■toe is in rare good fettle at the present time, as he is by Mute out of Zoe ha should go begging long. A London cablegram says Mr Benzon, the “Jubilee plunger,” in h» book narrating how he lost a quarter of a milion of money, says that a well known Melbourne sportsman advanced him .£l5OO and demanded £lO,OOO in repayment, but accepted £5OOO. Another demanded £30,000 and accepted £5OO. Mr Benzon considers the Flemington racecourse superior to Epsom. The entries for the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s spring meeting show a large falling off as compared with last year. In the Spring Handicap 20 have been nominated as against 27, in the hurdles 9 as against 10, and in the Flying Handicap 19 as against 2.3. This year, in the Spring Handicap, 11 local and 9 outside horses have been nominated, While last year there wore 11 local and 16 Outside horses entered. In thia morning’s isaue Mr Wm. Adam?, the welbknown jockey, announces that ha is prepared to receive two or three horses to train. “Billy ’’ is widely known as a painstaking trainer, besides having brought numerous winners to the post for his many patrons. As the stables are adjacent to the Park Company’s training track the stalls Ought not to remain empty long. Further particulars may bs found in our advertising t&iumnp. The Committee of the Poverty Bay Turf Club have altered the date of their Spring meeting from Tuesday, the 15th October to Wednesday, 16th October, the latter being a Bank holiday. AUSTRALIAN ITEMS. The Spring Handicap (one mile and a quarter), run at Tattersali’B Club Meeting on the 24th ult., was won by Bagtier (6st. 10ib.), who beat a large field in the capital time of 2m. Ila. The Hon. J. White’s three-year-old Singapore (Bst) was made a warm favorite, starling at 2to 1; but he could not gain a place. He has since receded greatly in the Melbourne Cup betting. Lamond bes steadily advanced in the market for the Hawkesbury Handicap, until at last advices sto 1 was the best offer. The Victorian mare Tourbillon was at 10 to 1, >nd 1 was forthcoming about Bernardo, May Queen and Eilerdale were'at 14 to 1, and 20 to 25 to 1 was forthcoming about any other. The betting on the V.R.C. Derby has undergone somewhat of a change owing to the poor form displayed by Singapore at Tattersail's Meeting. Dreadnought has supplanted Singapore, 5 to 1 being offered on the field, while 8 to lis offered against Singapore. Silverton a firm favorite for the Melbourne Cup, to 8 being the beet price on offer against the Ballarat representative, while Tradition figures at 100 to 6. Singapore has been knocked back to 100 to 4. The well-known Victorian trainer, Mr J. Morrison, died at Dr. Fitzgerald’s private hospital, Melbourne, on the 22nd ult.
