Saturday, September 7, 1889. THE OLD ADAM.
Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou aim'st at be thy country’s, Thy God’s, and truth’s.
We have always had impressed upon us, and still cling to the belief, that a regard for the truth is essential in any person who can be considered to have a legitimate claim to convey religious instruction. Certainly some of those into whose hands the control of the local branch of the Salvation Army has lately drifted are so economical of the truth that there are times when it is not capable of discernment. On a recent occasion we exposed one member whose utterances soared far beyond the level of plain fact. We had hoped that the lesson would have been useful, and that the reputation of an organisation which has undoubtedly been a great power for good, would not again be sullied, in Gisborne, at any rate, by statements that ought to bring joy to the heart of the enemy of mankind. If the lesson were of service its effect has not been permanent, for the other evening a prominent member of the Army delivered himself in terms that were more noted for their bluster than their truth. A paragraph which appeared in the Standard of Thursday morning seems to have touched a tender spot, and the Statements made were vehemenently denounced as “ a parcel of lies.” In our turn we characterise that assertion ?,S an outrageous falsehood. The paragraph was perfectly true, and ip truth can be vouched for by dozens o, reliable persons who heard ft? rernarks 1 We do think it a great shame that’ a bane should be cast over the good work that the Army has done, by this epntemptible conduct on the part of some of those who have joined its ranks. If the individual alluded to had in the first instance used words which did not properly convey his meaning-, he might have taken the honorable course of making a straightforward explanation. As he took a very different course, and to suit the purpose threw aside ail religious scruples, he must not be surprised if in future his utterances, even when strictly truthful, are regarded with distrust. Those who. take ady part in the work of religious bodies should be beyond the teuiptatfon of resetting to falsehood!
