Saturday, September 14, 1889. BOROUGH ELECTION.

Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou aixn’st at be thy country’s, Thy God’s, and truth’s.

The Borough election passed off very quietly on Thursday. The result was as we hoped and anticipated, though the placing of the candidates surprised a great many people. Yet a little consideration will make the matter easily understood. Everyone felt so certain that Mr Dunlop would head the poll that few concerned themselves to take the least trouble on his behalf, the result of course being that he only got third place. Mr Hepburn had the united support of those burgesses living at the upper end of the town, aided by his popularity throughout the Borough. Mr Whinray had that general support to which he is justly entitled, and his friends did good service on his behalf. Mr Joyce’s anticipations were rudely shocked, but it is well to be easy on a defeated opponent. Though we lose him as a Councillor his services as a good citizen will, we hope, be long available, and the experience of Thursday may serve as a useful lesson to Mr Joycg, and to others. A report has been circulated that there will be an attempt to upset th? election, on the ground that Mr Hepburn’s scrutineer, when outside, asked someone to vote for that gentleman. But we do not think there is any truth in the report, and feel satisfied that it cpuld only have been circulated by an opponent pf Mr Joyce. No person believes Mr Joyce fb be so foolish as to sacrifice any hope that he may have left of at some future time regaining the confidence of ratepayers. There is at present little for the elected Councillors to do, beyond exercising great care in the administration of the scanty funds at their disposal. Before their term of office has expired there may be a great change for the better, and every ratepayer hopes that it will be so.
