THE GISBORNE POUND.
That the ohauge in tha control of the Gisborne Pound has proved a satisfactory experiment, there is now no reason for doubting. At the last meeting of the Council Councillor Lucas made reference to the subject, and in doing so pointed out that the way in which the previous report to the Council had been made out bad not given the public a fair idea as to how matters stood, Mr Faram's whole salary having been included in the expanses, whereas only a small proportion should be charged to the pound account. He asked that Mr Bourke should give the actual position in regard to the pound, The Town Clerk said that to the end of August the receipts had been £29 6s, The expenditure was £65 2s 4d. But as that included the cost of the pound (£4O) the figures show that the pound has paid expenses, a point in regard to which there was much doubt when the change was made. Then there is the further satisfaction of knowing that up to the present not a single complaint has been heard, and the streets have been kept cleared of stray stock. Therefore the change has proved to be a very satisfactory one, and results have shown that those who urged it had carefully considered tha question in all its bearings. There is a good deal of difference in the monthly returns, and perhaps it may be said that even yet there has been no practical proof by results, but we think that the returns may be taken as a fair average for the year.
