CONGRATULATIONS.

PERSONS of every religious denomination in Gisborne view with pleasure the appointment of the Rev. J. E. Fox, Incumbent of Holy Trinity Church, as one of the first Canons of the newly constituted Chapter of the Diocese of Waiapu. It will not, as even some members of the congregation appear to suppose, deprive the district of the services of the rev. gentleman ; it will only add certain duties to those already performed by the Rev. J. E. Fox, In his sermon on Sunday evening the Rev. A. Gardiner, in referring to the subject, said : —“ Before commencing my address this evening, I should like to say a few words on a subject which must be of interest to you all, and which has, doubtless, given you great pleasure and satisfaction. As you know the Synod of this Diocese last week passed a bill constituting a Cathedral Chapter, It was decided that for the present the Chapter should consist of a Dean, four Canons, and two lay members. The Bishop had the right to nominate two of the Canons, and it must be a matter of great pleasure to us all to know that in nominating the Rev. J. E. Fox, as one of the first Canons of the newly constituted Chapter, the Bishop has shown his appreciation of the faithful and self-sacrificing labors of your incumbent. In nominating him the Sishop said that he nominated one who, as a divine and scholar, would hold an honorable position in any institution of the kind in the Mother Country.” We feel sure that the remarks quoted will be fully endorsed, not alone by members of the congregation, but by all who have had the pleasure of knowing the rev. gentleman, and in an equal measure must our congratulations be tendered to the Ven. Archdeacon Williams, who was also, by the Synod, nominated one of the four Canons.
