The London County Council has refused a license to the Procadero Aquarium. The Daily Chronicle maintains that lh< appointment of. colonial Governors must r-m&in with the Crown, owing to the frequent changes of Ministers in the colonies. Obituary—Sir Daniel Goa oh, aged 74 years. At a banquet given to Lord Hopetoun prior to his departure for Me bourne, Sir Walter Buller, who was present, represented New Zealand, Sir Dillon Bell being unavoidably absent. Lord Knutsford, in proposing the health of Lord Hopetoun, said it was essential that the Crown should be solely responsible for the appointment of Governors of the oclonies. In responding to the toast. Lord Hopetoun said Earls Kintore, Carringt. a and Onslow would, on their return to England, take higher positions in the affaire of the State after their colonial experience. England, he said, after long neglecting her colonial interests, had at length come to fully appreciate the value of the colonies, Sir Graham Berry proposed the toast of tbe Colonial Empire, and said that the cause of Federation was progressing, as was evidenced by the recent conference, at which an agreement had been arrived at in respect of the maintenance of the Australasian squadron, In comparison with the great empire of Germany and Italy, Australia was weak, but was rich, and would be at the mercy of whichever power might be dominant after an European war, if ebe separated from England. The Hight Hon. Mr Childers also responded.
