MR GRAHAM’S RESIGNATION.

Mr A. Graham has sent in his resig nation as a member for the East Coast electorate. His doing so at the present juncture will be a matter for general regret, though we feel sure that hfr Graham will still endeavor to do all that becomes a good citizen. To be frank, Mr Graham has hot made a successful representative, and in case of his coming forward again we should have felt it our duty to strongly oppose him. But we give him full credit for having worked hard in the interests of the district, and for having spared no pains to take that action which he believed to be best for the district as a whole. He has been a conscientious worker whom ev.ch one of us must respect. Mr A, C. Arthurs name has been mentioned as

that of a probable successor. That gentleman is a settler of sterling worth, and there is no doubt would make a good representative, but at present it is premature to have much to say on that part of the subject. Indeed we think that Mr Arthur’s friends would be doing him a service if they were not in such a hurry to push him forward, even before anything definite was known as to the resignation. It is equally foolish to tell us that there is no likelihood of an election contest because after the next session of Parliament there is a certainty of a dissolution. It must be remembered that the man who is elected on this occasion, whether opposed or not, will have an enormous advantage over any candidate who may take the field against him when the time for the general election comes round. In a few days, however, we ought to have more definite information to go.upon, and we hope that Mr Arthur will consent to stand for the seat. It is at all times a gratifying thing to see men of stamina take an active interest in our public affairs, and the day has gone by when we can even submit to listen to bletherskites.
