Major-General Edwards in the Colony.

Willington, last night. The holding oapaoity of the drill abed wtl taxed to the utmost last night when M.jor. . General Edward# in.peotad the looal Tolunteer.. There w— 504 men on parade, out of a possible 661, Colonel Bott, waa in charge. Major-General Edward, waa aeoom. panied hr Captain Ru.seli, Mr Fergus, Oolonele Humphrey. Hume, and Pearce, and Mr Diuglas. Major-General Eiwarde expressed himsslf well pleased with the appearance and turn out of the men. He said h» would like to see the men reoei.e about £l2 per annum pay. to compensate tor tbe lose of wages when called out for military eerrioe. and out of which they could purchase their own uniforms. When the parade was diemissed the D Battery went through big drill, and the Wellington Navals (whose parade strength is 94) were put through submarine mining drill and signalling practice. MsiorGeneral Edwards afterwards attended a dinner given by the officers of the garrison. He speaks iu unqualified praise of New Zealand defences so far as he has seen them, and also of the Permanent force. He leaves for the south.
