COLONIAL TELEGRAMS.
(EROM OUB OWN CORRESPONDENTS.") Wellington, last night. A hitch has occurred in connection with the Palmerston and Asburst railway contract, and work has been stopped. The workmen, however, are protected under the Waues Act. Government have in hand about £5OO due to the contractor, and several workmen have taken steps to have tbe amount impounded. The Government have given the contractor notice to proceed with the work within seven days, otherwise fresh tenders will probably be called for. CuniSTCHVimit, last night. The Education Board this day resolved, 11 That as the Board has been obliged to anticipate, for works urgently required, about half the amount apportioned to this district, Ministers’ attention be drawn to the necessity for allotting a further sum, in order that the Board may be in a position to provide schools and effect repairs urgently needed and a long time authorised. ” The motion was passed in consequence of a latter received from Mr Habans, stating that the North Canterbury Board's share of the building grant was only £3785, more than half of which has already been spent. Mr Justice Denniston delivered judgment yesterday in the case of Bing, Harris, and Co. v. Commissioner Customs, giving defendant general costs as if £l4O had been claimed, and plaintiffs costs of any witnesses called solely on any issues as to furs and fancy goods, these not being liable to forfeiture.
