SPORTING.

“ Good wine needs no bush ” is a very common saying, and may be safely applied to the efforts of the newly formed Gisborne Racing Club. Nothing has been left undone by the managing committee to render the opening meeting on Nov, 11th a genuine success, and that it will be so is us nearly certain as things on this earth can be. The grand stand arrangements will be productive of comfort and convenience to]visitors, whilst the course will certainly be so of good racing. In connection with the latter it may be remarked that Mr Joyce, a wellknown Napier trainer, who arrived with Fitzjamea on Thursday, visited the track yesterday, and expressed his surprise that so much had been accomplished in so short a time, and prognosticating that in the course of another year the Park ground would be second to none in New Zealand for racing purposes. The handicapper, Mr J. O. Evett, too, has materially assisted in ensuring an enjoyable and exciting meeting. The weights have been so allotted that although some slight errors of judgment are mentioned, still the results of the handicaps remain in doubt—there being no “ certainties.” The owner of Man Friday was, up to the last moment, unable to decide as to whether he would remain for the coming meeting, or proceed to Wellington with his horse, where it is nicely weighted. This certainly tends to show that the little brown was not weighted out here. How. ever, the horse has gone, and a visitor in the shape of Fitzjames (who will be under the care of Alic Parsons) has arrived. Constant work is going on at the Park, and as the training track is exceptionally good, the horses are making capital progress. Owing tn a rumor of hia bring an unliknlv s’artei ' e the Cap.
