Wb remember reading somewhere that Captain Rowlands, of the Gisborne branch of the Salvation Army, was the “Champion Debt-extioguisher,” and the suitability of the title certainly does teem to be in reason, oonsidering the work that has been done In Gisborne duriog the past quarter, Notwith. standing the dullness of times the Army has been enabled to free itself from debt and ta carry a email balance into the next quarter. The “ Spiritual Account," for the quarter ended September, shows receipts £B7 16s Id. and the expenditure leaves a balance of £8 10.2 d cash in hand. The ** Trade Account," which bad a balance of Ils from the previous quarter, shows receipts £24 12s 4d, and a balance of £1 4a is left to the good. Fot copies of the War Cry £l6 9. 3d waa received. In the Spiritnal account tha Sunday collections are shown to bq £l6 Ils Id; week night collections, £24 19s sd; “ cartridges,” £l5 14a <1; profit on demonstration!, teas, eta., £2O 5s 6d. 4 complete list pf the expenses is giysn, the largest itetqe being £l3 for rent and £l2 fla for Captain's allowance. It speaks well for Captain Rowland's management when tha total receipts on the two aecounte amount to eo large a aum for one quarter; but in addition to that a large sum has been collected for special purposes. Tberehas just occurred what is called the “ Self-denial Weak.** which is observed by the members of tbe Army all over tha world, tbe object baing to give further financial aeaiatanoe to tbe work being dona in Africa.
