FULL DESCRIPTION OF CAULFIELD CUP.
Melbourne, Oct 20. The following is a full description of the race for the Caulfield Cup, run yesterday : — Betting : 4 to 1 v. Bravo, 6 to 1 v. Meteor, " to I v. Don Giovan, 40 to 1 v. Moorbank and Manton, 12 to 1 v. Sinecure, 14 to 1 v, Chaldean and Dunkeld, 15 to 1 v. The Charmer, 20 to 1 v. Boz, 25 to 1 v. Wycombe, Menotti, Green Isle, Pakeha and Islander, 33 to 1 v. Bothwell and Lonsdale, 50 to 1 the others.
As they drew up at the post the best positions next the rails were occupied by Bravo, Pakeha, The Charmer, Silverton, Meteor, Chaldean and Boz, while conspicuous on the outside were Dunkeld, Bothwell, Don Giovan, Tartar and S.necure, and in the Centre could be seen Moorbank, Islander and Teuton. The lot were spread out pretty well
all over the course, and Dunkeld, being particularly troublesome, lashing out all round, delayed the start a little. Only five false attempts occurred, however, before the word was given, and aa well as could be seen from the stand, Chaldean and The Charmer broke the line first, followed by Menotti, Teuton, Silverton, Stanley, and Don Giovan, the last to leave being Bothwell. After passing the, distance post Don Giovan was most successful in the race for position and taking* place near the rails had his head in front at the judge’s box, where Teuton and Sinecure were at his girths, next to them being The Charmer and Chaldean, side by side and e'ear of Boz and Pakeha, the
remainder being headed by Dunkeld, Moorbank, and Meteor, while the rear was brought up by Bothwell and Tartar. As they headed for the first turn and commenced to rile the hill Chaldean and The Charmer took tip the leading positions and Boz appeared in third place, Don Giovan following him and being waited on by Teuton, Sinecure and Gasburner, the others being closely bunched With Bravo apparently hemmed in with Moorbank. At the mile post Chaldean drew olear of The Charmer and led her a couple of lengths, Mr Cook’s mare having Sinecure •Ba Teuton at her girths, while Boz, Don Giovan, Gasburner and Bravo on the rails and Moorbank commanded the ruck, with Bothwell still last, The next hundred yards brought about a change. Chaldean fell back and Sinecure joining The Charmer they threw the seven furlongs behind them together, Dunkeld, Chaldean, Gasburner, and Boz following in a heap, and then came Bravo, pakeha, Teuton, and Moorbank, with Meteor’s colors showing conspicuous at the head of the others, Going round the far turn Sinepure drew clear in the lead by himself, and was the first to head for the railway, Teuton, Dunkeld and Pakeha lying in company, a length off and slightly separated from Moorbank, Gasburner and The Charmer side by side, the next division being composed of the already beaten Don Giovan, Chaldean, Bravo and Silverton, and Meteor could be seen fast approaching the front. In a few strides Sinecure showed signs of tiring, and at the five furlongs he was joined by Dunkeld, bn which Teuton and Pakeha were still in attendance, and then came Gasburner, in company with The Charmer, Don Giovan and Meteor, and Bravo was in command of the others, Dunkeld and Sinecure continued if <ui Mi lb* wort till the five furlongs ware
passed, when Meleor, on the outside* immediately joined them, and The Charmer began to thread her way through the others. Before reaching the mudwall Meteor stretched out clear of hie field, and in a few strides had a two lengths lead, Sinecure lying second, but with his rider hard at work, and there Pakeha went up third, waited on by Gasburner, but Dunkeld, who was next, had had enough. Moorbank, Don Giovan, Bravo and Boz followed in a cluster. Another hundred yards saw the hopes of Sinecure’s followers scattered to the winds, as the blue and white representative retired among the beaten division. Then Pakeha and Charmer went up side by side within a length of Meteor, who was still going well, while Silverton, Don Giovan and Bravo were in command of the others and waited on by Dunkeld and Boz. Then commenced the struggle for premier position in the straight, and Meteor being successful was the first to turn hie bead for home, but The Charmer, on the rails, was at his girths, and half a length from Pakeha, with Hales hard at him, and then a length and a-half oft came Boz, with I Bravo and Silverton side by side. When the I race to ths judge fairly commenced Meteor I held up the flag of hope to his backers by once I more drawing out, but it was only an expiring I effort, and upon reaching the distance The Charmer, who closed upon him, had his pretensions settled. A little further on a shout proclaimed a victory for Mr Cook's mare, but at that instant Bravo and Boz put in powerful claims, and as Pakeha, Silverton and Meteor were close bandy, and the lot spread half-way! across the course, it was difficult at the instant to foretell the result. A few I strides more, however, and the Cup of 1889 was over, as Ramage shook Boz up at the end of the stand, and cutting the game and struggling Charmer down 50yds. away, ran home a comfortable winner by three parts of a length. Bravo was third, on The Charmer’s quarters, and Meteor a good fourth, Then came Pakeha, Silverton, Wycombe, Teuton, I Gasburner, Stanley, Bothwell. Dunkeld, Don iGiovan, and Green Isle in that order, while ithe last to finish we.-e Menmti, Ter.ar, Moorjbaiik and Chaldean, Time, 2min, 43see. Though the weather was not good during .4110 day the three stands were packed to overflowing, the various paddocks were attended by dense throngs, and the centre of the course was patronised 'ey fully 10,000 persons, who made up a very motley collection indeed. Roughly estimating the attendance, there must have begn close upon 25,000 heads present,
