There has been an explanation attempted in regard to Mr Hume's appointment ip the Defence Department, but the explanation only makes matters worse, and plainly admits the perpetration of an aet of favoritism which compromises the dignity of the Colony. We are told that it is a kind of dummy appointment so as to give Mr Hume a chance of obtaining a commission in the War Department at Home. If this is not making use of a privilege for the purpose of deception, then we must have failed to understand the position of things. And why is Mr Hume granted this exceptional treatment ? One has not much difficulty in understanding the reason why. Would any other deserving young man be put in a position of the kind simply because he wanted to make use of the position for another purpose ? It is stated that instead of getting increased pay Mr Hume will get less than he did as an ordinary clerk, Is it not a humiliating thing when public offices are made use of in this dummy fashion ? Paltry actions nf the kind are beneath contempt.
