Tne raoa for the Canterbury Plate resolved itself into a match between Abercorn and Sinecure and Melos, all in an interest, against Carbine, and when the latter suffered ignomt« nous defeat there was a good deal of grumbling at the way he was ridden. Sinecure, in the interest of his stable companion, took up the running from the start, and round the river turn he was fifteen lengths to the good. Carbine lying second and Aberoorn last. Nearing the bridge Meins ran up to Ctrbinr, whose jockey was making no apparent effort to get up to the leader. At the scraping sheds Carbine, Melos, and Aberoorn were bunched together and the throe raced after Sinecure, who was not headed until within 100 yards from the winning post, when Aberoorn got on level terms, eventually winning by three parts of a length, Melos six lengths away third, and Carbine last, eight lenghts behind Melos. Abercorn’s victory wis received with deafening cheers. The betting at the 1 post|was oto4 on Carbine, 6to 4 against Aberoorn, 4 to 1 Melos.
