The Assets Company’s Affair.

AN OUTSIDE CRITICISM.

Napier, last night, The Evening News has an article tonight having reference to the Graham oase, and publishes the Gisborne Standards article which referred to what took place before the last East Coast election, when the late Johu Baldwin, editor of the Independent, stated that Mr Graham was going into the House for the express purpose of fixing up the Assets Company’s titles, and which Mr Graham at that time denied. The News says 1 “ The Standard's account of What took plane is a most accurate and honest one, Mr Wilaon, who aupported Mr Allan McDonald as against Gannon and Graham, could not believe at that time that Mr Baldwin’s accusations were founded upon fact, and was, wo are authorised to state, solemnly assured by Mr Graham personally that there was no truth whatever in the statement by the Independent, He now sees, as will also tho Gisborne public, that Mr Baldwin was perfectly correct in what ho said, and he (Mr Wilson) regrets very much that the Standard, at tfee time of the election, did not more strongly protest against Mr Graham's candidature, We trust that the Poverty Bay people will ruthlessly reject Mr Arthur's wooings, as we feel oonvinced that he, like Mr Graham, has personal objects in trying to get into Parliament, We advise the electors to vote for Mr Rees as a suitable representative of the industrial classes and the email settlers, as against the big runholders whose faulty titles they wish to fix up. There has boon one ‘ fixing up ’ member from the district, do not let there be a second.” In another article on the Poverty Ray election the News says; “Mr Rees does not claim to belong to either of tho socalled political parties, but the whole tenor of his address is strongly Liberal, and as a Liberal organ we are very anxious to see him elected. We are glad to hear from Gisborne that his supporters are daily increasing in number, and that he will be aided by all the proipinent business people of the place. This is as it should be. To return a squatter would be the very height of folly on the part of the Gisborne people. ”
