The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE. Published every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday Morning.

Saturday, December 14, 1889. THE ELECTION.

Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou airn’at at be thy country's, Thy God’s, and truth’s.

The election for the vacant seat in the representation of the East Coast district in Parliament is now a thing of the past, though we are not yet definitely informed as to the result. Those who ought to be the best able to judge say that the victory is now assured for Mr Arthur. Still the difference must in any C£se be so small that it would not be wise to assume that the result a certainty.

Of this much, however, there can be no reason to doubtthe result is, all the circumstances being considered, a substantial victory for the Liberal party Not a victory, perhaps, as the term is generally understood : we do not claim to have won the seat, but we do claim that the result has been very different to what Mr Arthur’s friends believed would be the case. The Liberals had not only to fight against the tremendous influence which the large landholders can bring to bear in such a contest, There was the undeniable fact that a large number of electors had pledged themselves to support Mr Arthur's candidature, before it was known that there would be another candidate in the field, Then, again, many electors Were induced to oppose Mr Rees bemuse they had been led, perhaps wrongly, to entertain objections against him on personal grounds.

As it was (he party obtained a majority at the leading centres— Gisborne, Ormond, and Clyde, The general election has now to be borne in mind, and yesterday’s experience should inspire the Liberal party with perfect confidence in their ability, at the general election, to gain possession of the seat from those who have so long succeeded in having the district represented according to their own lights.
