The postage of a letter from New York to San Francisco, overland for a distance exceeding 8,000 miles, is one penny. _ The New York Tribune objects to Australian competition in the American wool market, on the ground that American woolgrowers ought to be effectively defended in thqiy industry against the "destroying and degrading influence of competition with wool grown by serfs, ravages, and convicts,” The Tribune is a little bit weak in geography, though its intentions may be good. There have been 230 cases of typhoid fever at Melbourne during the past three months, and 31 deaths. Thia is unusual, .considering the wsather. Ju diphtheria there have been 97 cases reported within the past three weeks, and a proportionate number Of deaths to the typhoid returns. Both diseases are not increasing, but on the contrary appear to be somewhat milder.
