THE FEDERATION QUESTION.
MORE TWADDLE. London, January 3. The Marquis of Lome considers a federal army essential to the defence of Australia, and suggests that New South Wales shall co-operate with England in framing an Imperial tariff in respect of articles that can be produced within the dominion of the the Empire. The proposed deputation to Lord Salisbury, on the subject of Federation, has been postponed ineflnitely. (FROM OUB OWN COBBKSPONDENT.) Wellington, last night. It was supposed the Premier would have stayed in Australia for the Federation meeting, but, contrary to the desire of his colleagues, he decided to return because he had made a promise to attend the Masonic meeting at Dunedin on the 24th inst.
