Two woman were, at the Auckland Police Court this week, sentenced to a week’s hard labor for stealing flowers. Not )ong since a resident in Vincent street had his flower garden stripped, and in an hourta time the pilferers went and offered to sell him some of his own flowers done np into bouquets. At the Wairarapa on New Year’s Day (says the Star) one of the most exciting events was the race between the Masterton Municipal and Volunteer Brigades with their engines at the Are at Kuripuni. The distance was a good mile all steadily up hill, and the Municipals received a good heavy handicap through the weight of the Jubilee—about two tone, The two brigades ran neck and neqk as far as Neill’s stables, where a stoppage wee made by the Municipal to see if a horse was obtainable. This gave the Volunteers a start, but they were quickly overhauled and another good race ensued as far as St. Patrick’s, where another stoppage to feed the Jubilee’s furnace gave the Volunteers a start of about 50 yards.
