COUNTY COUNCIL.
An ordinary meeting of the Council was held yesterday afternoon. Present: Crs Clark (Chairman), King, Tuohy, Murphy, and Orr.
The General Survey office wrote :—I am requested by the Minister of Lands to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 29th ultimo., urging that a road to the Mangapapa and adjacent blocks should belaid off through the Wbangara block, and that the moneys received from the sale of the Mangapapa Block should be brought under the operations of the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1888. In reply, lam to inform you that the road which your Oouncjl wishes to have taken, runs through land the right of road through which has expired. The Chief Surveyor will, however, enquire into the matter on his next visit to Gisborne. With reference to the Mangapapa Block, as the land was bought for cash, the proceeds from it do not come under the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act. —Received.
Mr A. B. Newman wrote, in regard to a drain that had been complained of, that those who had signed the petition were willing to pay half the cost (£l4) of the work they wished done, and also to fence it in. They asked for a decisive answer.
B. Knox wrote Should your Council deem it advisable to blind the stone I am putting on the Pakarae Road, with beach shingle, I am willing to do the work at 2s per cubic yard. I make this offer as lam of opinion that the present work will be of little use without, owing to the poor quality of ■tone.
The Council decided not to accept the offer.
With regard to a claim from Mr Knox for loss of a horse at the Pakarae, it was agreed to reply saying that the tiodnqil would not acknowledge the claim.
The ranger reported that 30 head of cattle had been impounded since last meeting.—Cr Tuohy said complaints were made that the roads were not kept clear, The ranger’s attention should be drawn to the matter. The Chairman said that some stakes had been left at the Bepongaere ford, and the Council decided to inform Mr Price that if he did not remove them at once, the Council would order the work to be done at Mr Price's expense, The Clerk reported that the overdraft was still large, and £5lO was required that day. The following tenders were received Wsispu and Makarika Road : G. and J. Smith (accepted), £185: J. B, Jackson, £258. C 95—Section 1 : Beady and Katene, £B7 ss; G. and J, Smith (accepted), £B5. Section 2 I G, and J. Brnitl), £6l; Ready and Katene (accepted), £59 10s, The Engineer asked for permission to accept tenders on the ground for the Waiapu Road—abont £74 is to be expended on this work.—Agreed to, The Engineer reported accepting a tender of Milner’s at £24 10s for the Tuparoa Boad, it being the lowest,— Approved of,

Bldgood £9, It wae ordered that all payments to Dole man should he withheld until next meeting, owing to his not having attended to his maintenance contract, and the Council decided to enforce a penalty for the delay. ' The specifioatlcaa for the maintenance contracts were ordered to be ready by next meeting, so thst tenders ooqld he called for on the 21st of February, It was decided to erect another trough at the Roseland, The Engineer was directed to call tenders for works required on the Waiapu Inland Road, Tenders to bejn at the second meet- :*** of the Council in February, The Audit Department returned the Council's balance sheet for the half year ends 180th September, 1389, which was certified to as correct.
After some other formal business had been transacted, the meeting adjourned,
