THE GISBORNE STANDARD.
TH Ji VrI&JtSUitJN n B? a paragraph elsewhere it will be noticed that the Gisborne Standard has changed hands, Mr W. E. Akroyd being the purchaser. That gentleman having been Secretary of the Company his purchase show's the confidence possessed in the future of the paper by those best able to form a judgment upon its position. Upon its first appearance the Standard had a hard fight to obtain a footing, but the initial difficulties were successfully overcome, and though for the past eighteen months things have not been very bright in this district the STANDARD
has steadily increased its hold and the people have learnt to regard it as an independent critic on all matters of public importance, while its comments are quoted far and wide by its fellow journals in other parts of New Zealand. Though we do not want to lay ourselves open to a charge of blowing our own trumpet we cannot help feeling proud of the high position which the Standard has attained. The new proprietor having previously been Secretary of the Company will probably maintain the same steady pace which Is the most certain of continued success, and trie members of the Company feel assured that the paper will continue to be conducted in a way that will fentitle it to the
support of the public. It must, at the same time, be borne in mind that the greater support there is given to a journal the more encouragement there is to show enterprise and spirit in carrying out the work that should always be aimed at—the promotion of the public welfare. We feel sure that the Standard, in the hands of the new proprietor, will not only be entitled to a continuance of support, but that it will be heartily given.
