BRITISH RESIDENTS APPEALING TO ENGLAND TO BE GENEROUS. FRICTION AT LISBON: THE WOMEN AGAIN. Lisbon, Jan. 17, There is still considerable excitemei t here over the Government’s submiaaion to England, the populace being in a very sullen condition. The people became eo menacing a few days back that the British I'onsul threatened that a portion of the British fleet would anchor in the Tagus. The threat had the desired effect of making the populace act le a offensively, the Press having then urged the exorcise of more prudence. January 19. Tbs Portugeses merobants are dismiasing English clerks and Portuguese ladies decline to visit the British Embassy. The British residents of Portugal are appealing to Lord Salisbury to be lenient towards the Government ot Portugal. Pabis. January 19. At a meeting of Portugese residents here, Senor Manuel Zorilla, Spanish Republican, denounced what he termed the piratiosl policy ot the British Government. He said Spain and Portugal would shortly be united under a Republican Government.
