BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Borough Council met on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor and Crs. Handing, Whinray, Hepburn, Coleman, Taylor, Lewie, and Lucas.

The Road Overseer, In his report, mentioned that he had examined the Spring in Derby Street, and he did not consider » water good The spring was only a small one, and it would not warrant the Council going to any expense at present. He asked the Council for permission to have the crossing pitched at the junction of Gladstone Road aua Cobden Street. As most of the

material was on hand the work would only cost, about £6 The day labor for the fortnight was £8 12s.—Cr Whlnray moved that the crossing be done; the motion was seconded by Cr Lewis, but on being put to the meeting it was lost. The m Jonty of the Council were in favor of letting the work stand over until 31st March. A petition was presented asking the Counoi to proclaim a public holiday after noon on the 29th January, being the Jubilee Anniversary of the colony. On the motion of Cr Hepburn, seconded by Cr Harding, the request was granted. PAYMENTS. Accounts were passed as follows G. Humphreys £5 16j, J. Drummond £2O, W, H. Clayton £7. Common Shelton and Co. £1 10s South British lasumnoe Co. £2 3-s 9<i, J. R- Jones and Bridges account £1 15s, Gas Company £2 17s 9d, A. R. Muir £5 16<6d, R. Streeter £1 12s 4d, G. Read £2 3s 9d, Shellard and Gray £1 15s lOd, Sawyer and Pool £1 15s. e Mr Maude waited on the Council with reference to the action against him for ratee. He thought he had been wrongly treated, considering that he had never been onoe asked for payment, and included in the amount was £7 ’os, which he did not owe. The sum sued for was considerably over the

amount he had paid to the Council last year. Mr Maude then showed a list of the properties on which he was entitled to be rated. The total value was £304, and he had been sued for £403. Mr Chrisp had ■•ated in Court the day that there was a section of the Act under which the Council could adjusts claim. The agreement made atjthe AssessHiont Court was that ha should be rated for £304. The Clerk| 'explained that there was a certain amount passed by the Assessment Court and signed by the Judge, and that that was what Mr Maude now objected to. altered he (Mr Maude) said he would lay the m Attar before the Council. The Valuation Roll for the ensuing year was now open for inspection, which would give Mr Maude an opportunity to have the alterations made. On going over the valuation roll the Ooun« oil found one amount against Mr Maude for £BO5, but there were also some other proparties which had bean overlooked by Mr Maude. A The Council agreed to send Mr Maude a full explanation of the matter.
