Wharf Laborers' Union.
A jikbting of the Gisborne branch of the New Zealand Federated Wharf Laborers' Union was held in the Gisborne Public Hall on Tuesday evening. There was a large attendance of members, Mr J. Marshall being voted to the chair. The Secretary (Mr H. Greame) read a letter be had received from Capt. Oreagh, of Napier, tbe latter expressing, on behalf of the Committee of his Union, satisfaction at the action taken by the Gisborne working men; also surprise at the large number of names already obtained. A copy of the rules of the Union was also forwarded by Captain Creagh, and on being read by the Secretary were greeted with loud applause. A motion that a levy of 6d a member ba made to meet current expenses was carried. Some discussion took place as to whether the Union should advertise future meetings, one member making a proposal that a couple of blackboards be obtained and posted up in conspicuous places. This course, however, was vetoed by the meeting as not being commensurate with the importance of toe Union if it is to be carried out on a sound footing. It was agreed to forward the list of names obtained up to date, to the Napier Union. Each member will be provided with a medal, rules relating to which were read.
Other minor business was also transacted before the meeting adjourned. The Napier delegate, Captain Creagh, will arrive in Gisborne in a few days, when the election of officers will be proceeded with.
