The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE Published every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday Morning.

Tuesday, February 4, 1890. THE JUBILEE.

Be just and tear not; Let all the ends thou alm’st at be thy country’s, Thy God’a, and truth’s.

As the Borough Council to-night holds its first meeting during the Jubilee season we hope that the occasion will not be ignored in the way, we were surprised to learn, it was done bv the County Council. Of all places in New Zealand, Gisborne (or “Poverty” Bay) has a special reason to make a note of the Jubilee of the colony, and there is no reason why we should be at all modest in pointingout the historical precedence which this district is entitled to claim in ‘all that concerns New Zealand. The geographical position of the district has made it very backward (as compared with the cities) in the march of progress, but inexcusable modesty will in no way tend towards its advancement. There are at present in New Zealand hundreds of visitors, who, while in the pursuit of health and pleasure, will take the opportunities offered to make themselves acquainted with the notable features of the colony; and there is nothing to be lost and perhaps much to be gained by taking advantage of the occasion offered to direct attention towards the district of Poverty Bay. As a matter of etiquette it is certainly wrong that the occasion of the Jubilee should be ignored. We would suggest that telegrams of congratulation be sent to His Excellency the Governor and also to the Mayor of Auckland, framed in a way that will add significance to the messages because of thedistrict from which they are sent.
