ROWING MATCHES.
GISBORNE BEATEN: POVERTY BAY VICTORIOUS. (from oub own correspondents.) Napier, last night. The weather for the boat races this afternoon was beautiful. The attendance of spectators was large and included a considerable number of ladies. Me R. J. Hogg acted as starter, Mr F. Logan as judge, ana Messrs F. Parker and.R. J. Hogg as course judges.. The race between the Gisborne and Napier Clubs was the first, the Napier crew being—J. H. Smith, stroke, 10.8; A. Guy, 3, 12.0: J. Hutchins, 2, 11.0; J. B. Hughes, bow, 9.3; Fred Jago, cox. The race win fixed for 5 o'clock, but did not take place till 5.30. The boats got away well together. Gisborne, rowing a quicker stroke than Napier, got a load which they increased to a clear length, half a m’le from the start. Napier then gradually crept up, and at the mils had reduced the lend to half a length. Napier then spurting well, shot ahead and won rather easily at the finish, by two or three lengths, though Gisborne pulled a very plucky race. Time, 15m 355; distance, two miles.
Ths next race was between the Poverty Bay Club’s craw and a crew representing the Union (Napier) Club, whioh came oft immediately after the first race. The Union crew ware : Pulford, stroke ; Waterworth, 3 ; Fcrrcft, 2 ; Rule, bow. Poverty Bay got tbe lead at the start, and were never caught, winning as they liked, by two length’. Time, 15 min 6 rocs. Both crows were much cheered at (he finish.
To-morrow (Thursday) the Poverty Bay crew meet the Napier crew, and much interest is taken in the rase. It is expected that the race will be dose and exciting, but I fancy that the Poveity Bay colors will again ehow in the front,
THE POVERTY BAY REPRESENTATIVES IN AUCKLAND, Auckland, yesterday, The Poverty Bay representatives will row a strong oombired team at 6 o'clock to-morrow evening. The Gisborne boys will alio compete in two gig races on Saturday next. The crew will most probably return to Gisborne on Sunday next, AmjKUAND, last night. The Poverty Bay crew who came up to Auckland last week for the Rowing Association regatta have decided to remain till after next Saturday, so that they may ba able to take part in the races postponed front last Saturday. One of the best men in the crew, however, (Marshall), goes back by to morrow's boat, owing to unavoidable business engagements. A match was to have been rowed this evening at 8 between the visitors and a West End crew, but it has been postponed for a few days as two of the Poverty Bay men have gone into the country visiting friends. There seems to be a general desire among the rowing men that the Poverty Bay crew should have an opportunity ot showing what they can do with out best gig crew, and it is now suggested that the Champion Gig Race, in which tbelr boat was swamped, should be rowed again.
