The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE Published every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday Morning.

Saturday, February 9, 1890. THE FEDERATION CONFERENCE.

Ba just and fear not; Let all the ends thou aira’st at be thy country’s, Thy God's, and truth's,

From our telegrams it appears that it has not yet been decided whether or not the Press representatives are to be admitted to the Federation Conference in Victoria. When the affair is to be conducted in such a suspicious manner there is hot much likelihood of confidence being'inspired in the New Zealand people. It does seem to be the essence of vanity for a few men to arrogate to themselves the right to sit in private to formulate a scheme to shape the destiny of the Australian colonies. If that is the way things are to be conducted a very inauspicious start has been made, for if the Press representatives are not to be admitted no point has been gained in the successful demand that the Conference shall not . be held in some out of the way place in Australia. It might just as well be held in Hong Kong for all the difference that will be made if the proceedings are to be conducted with closed doors. We publish this morning the outcome of an interview with Mr Ballance, who speaks in a very decided manner upon the subject of Federation. His views give proof that he has closely studied the present movement; and the opinions to which he gives expression are entitled to much weight.
