. Lowdos, Feb. 7. Scores of bodies have been seen at the colliery in Newport where the late explosion occurred, but the rescue parties have been unable to reach them. The majority of those rescued were seriously inj urod. The explosion was heard for miles around. The bodies recovered are dreadfully mangled. There was a fearful scene at the mouth of the pit as soon as the news of the accident was confirmed.
Lord Hartington has started on a visit to Egypt. It is understood that Lord Salisbury will comply with the request for a Conference on the Zanzibar question. The dockers are negotiating to naoertain whether the various Unions will support a general strike. The dockers are preparing a schema enabling them to contribute to a sick and benefit fund for employees. It is reported that the Portuguese continue the system of terrorising residents in the disputed East African districts.
