AUCKLAND. Last night. It is now beyond doubt that the Chinaman arrested at Arcbhill, is suffering from leprosy. Tbs Earl and Countess of Kintaro left to day on a trip to Botorua and through the Lake country. The Hon. Mr Whitaker and Mr Stevens have (been summoned to Wallington to take part in a full Cabinet meeting next week. “ Elijah " was produced here to night, with Charles Santlay in tha title role, and an Auckland chorus and orchestra. There was a crowded attendance. H.M.B. Orlando (Admiral Scott) was at Bussell to day, on her way to Hobart. The Bev. J. Preston, of Spit, Napier, has bean appointed incumbent of St. Mary's pro Cathedral. Auckland. It is now pretty certain that the frnit crop this season will be scarce in all lines, not only in Auckland, but in the South and Australia. The Calliope Dock contract dispute is at length ended. Mr Lanigan, the contractor, accepts £2OOO, offered by the Harbor Board. Tbe direct steamer Tainui left Captown for Auckland on Monday last. The Devonport Ferry Company ptid a dividend of eight per cent and carried a substantial sum forward. A gentleman who has arrived from Tairua reports that the kauri bush is on fire. Firas also started in a dozen different places. Mr Justice Connolly proceeds to Gisborne to-morrow, to hold a sitting of the Supreme Court there.
WELLINGTON. Last night. Leprosy will be proclaimed under the heading of diseases subjecting patients to quarantine. The Standard Insurance Company pay a dividend of 7} per cent, and have a surplus of £5OOO.
The Mariposa, with English mails to 25th January, left 'Frisco for Auckland on the Bth inst., contract date. At the Blenheim races Sawdust won the Hurdles and Gladstone the Maiden Plate, Sincerity won the Cup. The weights tor the Wanganui Cup are— Dudu 9.2, Recluse 8.5, Hilda 8.0, St James 7.11, Lsnore 7.9, Lady Florin 7.9, Masthead 7.4. Patchwork 7.3, Wakatipu 7.0, The following cablegram has been received by the Premier from the Agent General: Hemp, New Zealand, is selling slowly and irregular. Fair middling, £22 to £24 ; good, £27 to £2B; prime, £32 to £33. Manilla, after a sharp recovery, is dropping again ;itis st £B9 to £4O; sisal has fallen £5. The prospects are still qpcertain.
CHRISTCHURCH. Last night. Bishop Grimes has bean presented with an address wishing him God speed and a safe return from England. Ha also received a purs; of sovereigns, New South Wales defeated Timaru at cricket by nine wickets, DUNEDIN, Last night. The attendance at tha ranee to day was tha largest for many years. Waitangi won tbe Hurdles, andThaokery tbe Ohampagne'Stakee, The Cup race resulted—St, James 1, Occident 2, Ixion 8. Sc. James, who was bred by Mr Thos. Morrin, Auckland, won by the shortest possible half a head, amid great excitement; time: 3min. 57|secs; dividends, £2 19s Gd Snd £2 10s. Many thought that Occident ad won. Tbe Publioan’e Purse was won by Merrie Bngfond.
