LOCAL AND GENERAL

Mr E. P. Joycs advertises for letting the offices lately occupied by Mr W. Brassey, solicitor.

Attention is directed to the sale of furniture which takes place at 11 this morning, being the property of Mrs E, ff. Ward. A fine selection is offered, the sale being conducted by Messrs Graham, Pitt and Bennett, at their auction mart.

The charge against Walter Watson, heard at the Supreme Court on Tuesday, was not without incidents of humor, and when anything of the kind occurred the accused was observed to be the person who generally first made a visible token of appreciation of the joke. The East Coast Hussars, who are now in camp at the Park Company's grounds, are organising an afternoon’s sports for Saturday next. Being under the auspices of the troop would in itself be sufficient to make the sports a success, provided they are favored with good weather, and it is fairly certain that there will be a large patronage of the general public. The sports commence at 1.45 p.m. By a telegram received yesterday we learn that Mr W. B. Edwards, of Wellington, is to be appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court and Commissioner under the Native Laud Court Act passed last session. Mr Edwards is not unknown in Gisborne, having attended the circuit sittings of t.'ie Supreme Court here on several occasions, and has the reputation of being a clever lawyer. At the Harbor Board mee ing on Tueslay night, Mr Chambers pointed out the neoes uy of seeing that rates were not allowed to fall into arrears, and expressed bis opinion that the Secretary should sue oo every Court day until all rates were paid up. The Chairman and Mr Shelton also agreed that the Secretary should push ratepayers who were in arrear. We have received the current number of “Typo,” which fully maintains the high standard of excellence which the journal has attained. In a complimentary reference to the Gisborne Standard our contemporary notes the purchase made by Mr Akroyd, Secretary of the Company, and expresses the opinion that Mr Akroyd will have no reason to regret the step he has taken.

A rowing match which ought i o excite a great deal of interest has been arranged for next week, perhaps on Tuesday, when the Poverty Bay Club’s two representative crews will meet on ths Tarnheru river. The winners are to ba presented with trophies provided by the President (Captain Tucker) and Vice-Presidents of the Oiub, Messrs Joyce and Herding. When it is said that the match has on'y been partially arranged it is meant Out with one exception the members'of each crew have expressed their willingness to row. It is hoped chat the one that has not yet consented will no longer pull in a reverse direction, It is very kind of the officers to offer tli« trophies, and the general public are with much interest anticipating a race.

At the last meeting of the Harbor Board, Mr Akroyd, Secretary of the Public Library Committee, applied for a remission of rates on the Library’s property, but the application was refused. Mr Chambers pointed out that the Board had the country ratepayers to consider as well as those in town, which the Library mainly benefited, and the Chairman said if they once started making such remissions there would be no end to other applications of the kind. Reynolds’ Burlesque and Variety Company, who have just concluded a euocaaeful season in Auck and, leave there for the South today and will play here on Friday and Saturday evening next, Gisborne lias not been eurfsited with travelling companies lately, and as the moonlight night will ba favorable for country visitors, a large audience should gnat them to morrow night. The comoany includes five lady petformers, The chargee of admission have been fixed at la, 2s, and Sa.

A large party of boys and girls from the Ghbornn and Mstawhero Schools were taken yesterday morning, tn the launch Snark, on an excursion to the ship Turaklne, now in the bay, shipping a cargo of frozen meat. The Matawharo contingent were driven Into town in a brake. There was a alight chop oa the sea and many of the youthful paaaongars had no need of an emetic, for promptings from within had a powerful effect. But taken all through they had a fine time of it and those who could not enjoy themselves at the time, bravely bore their discomfiture. On board the Turakina the officers were very obliging and they will be gratefully remembered by many young people in the Gisborne district. To Captain Power, Mr Hampton (Chief Engineer), and Mr Stevens (Chief Officer), and the other officers and members of the crew thanks are due for the cordial way in which they welcomed the visitors and showed them round the ehipnnd ita refrigerating works, Air Dougherty kindly allowed theprae use ef the Uunoh.
