Last night. Mr John Slater, tailor, Napier, was found dead in his bed this morning, at his residence, Dalton street, At an inquest this afternoon the medical evidence showed that death was caused by fatty digeneration of the heart, but a bottle of rough on rats was found on him and he had evidently taken some. A verdict of death from natural causes was returned. Deceased was much addicted to drink. He was aged about 55. unmarried. He was an old resident of Hawke’s Bay, having arrived over 30 years ago. Sixty of the Wellington Woollen Co.'s bands, mostly young girls, marched out of the works yesterday, in sympathy wi'h the discharged men. It is believed that the Company can continue operations without being effected. It is reported that Jonathan Robert-, who escaped from prison two years a-,0, has been captured on the Sydney side, Mr James Mills leaves for England shortly on Union S.S. Company's business. He will leave an open pair with the Government in case he is not back in time f ;r the session.
Mr Sayers, dairy expert, who is engaged at Dunedin Exhibition, is about to make a tour of the Southern factories.
The Wellington Butchers’ Union has decided to federate with the Trades Council. The Union has resolved to boyco-t the woollen mills goods and pledged themselves to contribute monetary aid to the looked out employees. Bishop Grimes left Christchurch for North on a visit to England, He was presented with 100 sovs, by the ladies of hie congregation. At the Dunedin Harbor Board meeting yesterday the facts of H.M.S. Orlando not crossing the bar was referred to as an injustice to the part. The metier was referred to a committee.
