The German elections have so far resulted as follows Centres 112, Radicals and Democrats 80, Socialists 37, Cartels 125, Poles 16, Alsatians 11, and Unattached 7. Nine returns are still wanting. The Prince of Wales opened the new Forth Bridge to-day. France annexes the Kingdom of Dahomey, West Africa, to prevent the sacrifice of five thousand slaves on the occasion of the accession of a King to the throne.

The London Times states that the fund for the Nordenskjold’s Antarctic expedition is inadequate, and it would be easy for [Australia to contribute £20,000 or £30,000. An express at Carlisle, Cumberland, collided with a standing engine. Four persons were killed, and fourteen injured. The Sportsman says that the Australian cricket team chosen to visit England, is far from being representative of the strength of the Australian centres. In the House of Commons Mr W. H. Smith said the Parnell party had been condemned on many grave charges, but the Government would not prosecute them, as the Statutory Commission had been used only to discover the truth. Mr Gladstone said the judgment given was unbalanced. It was absurd, he said, to deny that distress and evictions in Ireland had been caused by the demands made for rents, which it was impossible for the people to pay, and this had led to outrage. It was impossible to condemn the Irish for an act of union which was the offspring of tyranny and fraud. The Pan-American Conference will recommend the coinage of a silver dollar which shall be a legal tender with all American nations.
