FIRE BRIGADE COMPETITION.
GISBORNE’3 VICTORIES. [FBOM OUB OWH COBBIBFONDIKT.J Wellington, Tuesday night. The annual Fire Brigade competition commenced this morning. “ Annual,” it is termed, though the arrangements fell through last year owing to the dilatory way in which the thing was taken up by Invercargill. This year, however, the competition promises to be a great success, there being a large number of Brigades represented, and things generally bring well attended to by the officers. The competition took place at tho Basin Reserve. There was not a large at tendance in the morning, but there was a very Satisfactory number present in the afternoon, a half holiday being declared. The Gisborne men, by their smart practices, had already established a high reputation for their proficiency, though the ground must have placed them at a disadvantage, they having been accustomed to work on the metalled road. The water main went wrong at the start, so that the second event was taken first, Morrison for Gisborne, going through his work splendidly and cleverly beating a smart man representing the Gore and Gordon. Thq following were the results of the first day’s work :— Fibst Event.—Hose and Hydrant for Five
Men. First prize, handsome Silver and Bronze Shield (presented by the Fire Underwriters’ Association of Otago) and £25 cash or Trophy presented bv the Fire Underwriters' Association of Wellington. Shield to be won twice before becoming the property of the winners. Won at last competition by the Gisborne Brigade; 2nd prize, £lO cash. Gisborne did the work excellently, and the men were greeted with hearty cheers, [The tie between Wellington and Wanganui, on being run off, resulted in favor of the latter, the lime being sSsecs.J The shield now becomes the property of the Gisborne Brigade, they won it twice in succession. YESTERDAY'S WORK. GISBOIiNB STILL TO THE FORB—A BUN OF BAD LUCK. Owing to various delays things are not going as smoothly as they should do, and there is bungling on somebody's part. The events are not being run quite in the erder given in the programme. Proceedings were resumed at 10, w: Ith the— Jhibd Evxnt.— Manual Engine for Fiye Men. First prize, silver mounted Challenge Shield, piesented by the United Fire Brigades’ Association of New Zealand, and £25 cash or Trophy presented by the Fire Underwriters’ Association of Wellington. The trophy to be won twice in succession or subject to the ruling of the Association ; second prize, £lO cash. Bangiora, 52sacs ~ .. << 1 Gisborne, S4seos .. ~2 Spit was third with 55 2-ssecs, Ashburton fourth, and Napier fifth. Tenth Event. —Ladder Rescue, for Two Men. First prize, two Silver Medals, value £1 Is each, and £5 cash; second prize, two Bronze Medals, presented by Messrs Merryweather and Sons, and £3 cash, Gisborne, 20 l-sseos 1 Spit, 20 Morrison and Wildish ran for Gisborne. Marton, South Dunedin, and Boslyn came next with 21 2-sseos each, and Taranaki and Woodville 214-oseos each. Bjxth Event.— Life-saving Apparatus. To be worked by Six Men only. First prise, £10; 2nd prize, £5. Wellington, 60secs ~ ~ .. 1 Taranaki, 91secs .. ’ .. ..3 No others competed.
Seventh Event.— Hose and Hydrant for Two Men. One entry from each Brigade. First prize, two handsome Gold Medals, value £3 8s each; second prize, two Silver Medale, value £1 Is each. Wanganui, 23 2 sses 1 Xn this event Morrison, of Gisborne, missed fixing ths hydrant—heuce the work was not Bompleted. Ninth Event. —Manual Engine, for Five Men. First prize, five handsome Gold Medals, value £3 3seach, and £lO cash; second prize, £5 gash. This was not completed at dusk. So far the figures Stand- Palmerston North 53sec, H<4Mka 65sec, Wanganui »sjseo, Gisborne 81 Sseo. The Gisborne m<m were again um Runets. They passed the water, and had to back the engine, in doing which they lost a few seconds—probably enough to have secured a good victory—and are thus thrown Mt of it for this event. The weather was splendid during the day. Besides the uncompleted event, it is hoped to get the remainder completed to morrow, the events being at below r— Fiets Etest.— Hose and J>dder, for Five Men.
