The disease reported from Northern Italy, during the course of which the sufferers appear in a deathlike trance, has made its appearance in London. It is said that Mr Gladstone has declined an invitation to visit Ireland, as he fears that it may exasperate the Ulster party. A Bill has been introduced into the House of Commons to amend the Colonial Register of Company’s Act. It permits a register to be made in any colony. The Irish Land Purchase Bill was to have been introduced on Friday. Mrs Davis and her two sons, convicted on a charge of murder at Crewe, have been sentenced to death. The Union dockers at Liverpool are willing to work with blacklegs provided they are kept separated. Canon Saumarez Smith has accepted the Primacy of Australia, and leaves for Sydney in three months’ time. There is an outcry in the United States against the reduction of the sugar duties. The matter will probably be reconsidered. have been steady arrivals of hemp at London, and Manilla shows a decline, while New Zealand hemp is depressed. Five hundred students atthe University Academy of Agriculture at St. Petersburg, have been imprisoned, and will probably be expelled, for demanding privileges abolished in 1863. The Prince of Wales, on his visit to Berlin, was received by Emperor William with marked cordiality, and was accorded full honors. At a banquet in honor of the visit the Emperor William, in toasting Her Majesty, hoped that the armies and navies of Great Britain and Germany would co-operate to secure the peace of the world and that the blood union between the two nations would continue. A meeting of workmen held at the suburbs of Berlin to discuss the eight hours movement, culminated in disorder. The gendarmes were stoned, and were compelled to charge the mob with drawn swords, injuring many men and women. Two gendarmes were beaten to death, and others wounded. The rioting continues, and reinforcements have been despatched to the scene. Messrs Besslom and Ronald, woolbrokers, have issued a circular directed against the Australian purchases of wool. They state that the colonial market, being as a rule under relative European values, seriously prejudices the Home industry, and that there is little chance of a healthier tone till colonial purchases have been absorbed.
The Berlin Labor Conference, which has concluded its sittings, has agreed to prohibit children under 14 years of age working in mines, performing night work, or exceeding set hours per day; and to forbid women working in mines, and children are to be protected from engaging in unhealthy or dangerous trades. It was decided to abolish Sunday labor except in special cases. Choice New Zealand butter in London realised 80s to 100 s ; fair quality, 74s to 88s ; best Australian brings 104 s to 105 s. New Zealand cheese, 48s; medium quality, 28s to 445. In the House of Commons Mr LabouChen’s motion for the abolition qf the principle which regulates hereditary seats in the House of Lords was negatived by 8 majority of 62.

A HOTBED OF DISEASE.
Ninety-six cases of diphtheria were reported in Victoria last week, and there were twenty-five deaths from that disease. There were also 218 pises of typhoid. Crombie has been committed for trial on a charge of manslaughter in connection with the street fracas in which Robinson was stabbed in the eye with an umbrella, death resulting. The appointment of Bishop Smith as Primate of New South Wales, was officially announced in the Cathedral yesterday. The ship Earl of Zetland, for the safety of which much anxiety was felt, arrived at Sydney. Information has been received by mail of an outbreak of influenza and smallpox fltt Bififaporc.
