“LA GRIPPE.”
A REAL GRIP IN THE SOUTH. [by electric telegraph—special to the STANDARD,] Last night. The Colonial Secretary has received cable messages from the Boards of Health in New South and Victoria enquiring whether the influenza which is rife in Dunedin at the pr-sent time is similar to the dise ise which has been experienced in Great Britian of lat*». Enquiries were at once made from the medical authorities in Dunedin and a reply has been sent to the effect i hat the disease is the same as in Great Britian, that in the opinion of experts it was introduced by the shipping, and that it is of a very mild character.
Sever**! cases of influenza have made their appearance at Lyttelton, and the complaint is spreading. So far there has been no appearance of the influenza epidemic in Christchurch. Bad colds are frequent, but there is nothing that can be considered as an epidemic. One or two cases of children being attacked with symptoms similar to those character istic of la grippe have occurred. A telegram wired this afternoon says that people from Invercargill who have been to the Dunedin Exhibition have brought back the influenza or la grippe. There are a number of cases in town.
Another telegram says that an epidemic of mild influenza has broken out at Blenheim and a few cases are reported from Timaru.
