COUNTY COUNCIL

A special meeting of the Cook County Council was held yesterday afternoon. Present: CrClark (Chairman),Coleman, Orr, King, Murphy, and Tuohy. The meeting was to take into consideration the question of a rate in connection with the Kaiteratahi bridge. The order for striking a rate of ,ld in the £ in the Waikohu district was rean, and Or King formally proposed, and Cr Coleman seconded, that the order be confirmed. Ordinary business was then gone on with. Ewen Cameron again wrote enmnlaining of the delnv in regard tn settling about a portion of the Wairoa, which ran through his property. The Chairman said he had seen Mr Delte, who was a contractor for the fence, and he said the fence would be put up by the following day. Cr King said the Engineer had told them the road was in the right place and now it turned out to be wrong. If Mr Cameron had acted wisely be would have fenced the Ministers off.

Tbe Engineer explained that he had subsequently discovered that in some places the road had encroached, and he indicated how this had occurred. He was of opinion that it would bi better to take the proper surveyed line, which would cost from £5O to £6O. Cr King said if the thing had been attended to before none of the bother would have occurred. It was decided to advertise that the Engineer would go upon Monday and that intending contractors might accompany him, tenders to be in by noon on Tuesday. The Chairman thought that this would be satisfactory to Messrs Cameron aud Dette. Mr Kenny, solicitor, gave an elaborate opinion favorable to the Council proceeding in regard to the Kaiteratahi bridge, and considered that the legal objections urged could not be fatal to anything done. The Chairman thought there was no use in their discussing the opinion. Cr Coleman suggested that a reply be sent to Messrs DeLautour and Sievwright intimating that such an opinion had been obtained from Mr Kenny, and this course was taken. J. M. Bidgood wrote claiming £3 for damage alleged to have been done to bin dray, knowing, so ho wrote, that the Counoi|J was liable.—Letter received. V Tbe Makaraka Cemetery Trustees made an annual reporr, an amount of £5O being required to enable the Trustees to meet their engagements. In reply to the Chairman, the Clerk said the Council was not compelled to’contribnte a subsidy. Councillors considered that it was a good thing that the cemetery was not self supporting, when that was on account of the low death rate, «• Cr Tuohy proposed, and Cr King seconded, that £25 be granted, provided the Borough Council contribute a like amount. In regard to Malone’s contract, the Clerk said the bonds had been signed. The Clerk said that he had interviewed the several shipwrights about the Pakarae punt, but none of them could do the work at tho Engineer's estimate,‘£l7los. Eventually he had agreed to accept Mr Burns' offer at £l9, fearing that it would not be safe to delay the matter longer. The Clerk's action was approved of. It was resolved that two Councillors open tenders at noon on Saturday, the Sth, for the work on Bruce's cutting, Ormond road. The Chairman made reference to the growth, of Bathurst burr, and it was resolved to remind the maintenance contractors that the burrs ought to be out. Crs Orr and King referred attention to tbe way the plant was allowed to grow on private property at Karaka and other places. The Chairman and Councillors thought each individual should make an effort to get the troublesome plant kept down.
