[BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—SPECIAL TO ST ABD ABD. ] TERRIBLE - CALAMITY IN AMERICA. THOUSANDS OF LIVES LOST. MILLIONS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF PROPERTY DESTROYED. A GREAT CYCLONE. New York, March 30. A cyclone passed over the States of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Illinois, causing tremendous loss of life and damage to property. Fully five hundred persons were killed. At Louisville (Kentucky) a ball was in progress in the Town Hall. The building was destroyed, and three hundred dancers killed. Several gasometers exploded, carrying death and destruction all around. Ohio Valley was devastated, many towns were wrecked, and the loss to property is immense. The railway station at Louisville was swept bodily into the Ohio river. Two thousand houses were levelled to the ground. The city was speedily in flames at many points. A number of residents were burnt to death. A party of Scotch tourists, farmers, and
several English travellers were killed. The metropolis of Illinois was destroyed, engulphing the Catholic Church, which was full of refugees. The lowlands of Arkansas and Mississippi were flooded, and hundreds were drowned. In Indiana a cyclone swept everything in its path for a width of 500 yards. The towns of Bowling Green, Newport, and Jeffersonville suffered greatly from the tornado and floods. The mortality at Louisville is estimated at under too, and loss to property at 2,000,000. A tornado, accompanied by a snow blizzard, ploughed the track from Nebraska to'New York, 14 miles long by one-third that distance in breadth. The lists of casualties and mortalities are heavy. At Bowling Green, Metropolis, Nashville, and a number of minor towns, the tornado was officially predicted, but the populace were incredulous. The Mississipi embankment is yielding, being unequal to the pressure of the flood. The Mayor of Louisville states that relief will be needless so far as that city is concerned. It is believed a dam burst in the hills. The inhabitants were rescued at Texas, but all the principal buildings were washed away. LATER. The loss of property from the recent cyclone and floods was enormous. The only houses that were left standing by the floods were either wholly or partially destroyed by the cyclone.

A sensation has been caused in the Berlin city by a remarkable discovery in a house occupied by the wife of a Government official in a good position. It is asserted that scenes of a disgusting character have been witnessed in this establishment, and that the orgies have been attended by persons of high rank. Many young ladies of position are said to have been ruined. Lord Deerhurst mode an offer of five shillings in the pound, but it was declined. The new Education code prescribes irn proved teaching of colonial geography. A petroleum train has exploded at Baton tn. Lord Balfour Burleigh is mentioned as likely to succeed Lord Carrington as Governor of New South Wales. A Bill is projected firbidding colonial frozen mutton to be sold as British. The California Athletic Club has offered 20,000 dollars for a match between Suliirun and Jackson. It is asserted that the Emperor William purposely worried Prince Bismarck to resign. Sir John Gorst, speaking at the Labor Conference, said women and children would bleu the Kaiser. It is currently reported that the Marquis of Hartington is to marry the Dowager . Duchess of Manchester. Another Englishman is missing in Canada. Information has been received that the French have defeated tbs Dahnmeyans. At Liverpool children are starving as a consequence 0! the strike. Yesterday the dockers stoned the blacklegs and police. Count Herbert Bismarck has been decorated. Prince Bismarck has been pensioned and is compiling bis memoirs. An annual meeting wu held at St. John’s, Newfoundland, in connection with the
Fisheries dispute. Delegates were appointed to proceed to London and insist on the French being exo.uded. The American flag was displayed, amidst cheering. Now that Connt Herbert Bismarck has resigned, the German Preu bitterly assail him as the author of what they term the German diplomatic defeat in Samoa. The German Preu regard the recent Samoan convention u a blow to German prestige in the Pacific. The “Dutch Zagblett” des cribed Count Herbert as an addle bead. New Zealand flax is st £23 to £23 5s in London. Ths butter by the Fifeshire and Bimutaka was in poor condition, and only realised 48a. Ths House of Commons has rejected the Irish Local Option proposals. The Russo-Chinese situation is said to be very serious. The Imperial Government propose to introduce manual education in all schools. Newfonndland threatens to appeal to the United States. It is stated that Kaiser William is suffering from a nervous malady, end has been ordered to take a sea trip. The Prince cf Wales, and son, have gone from Beilin to Coburg. The Russian students have commenced an agitation fur freedom of conscience, liberty of the Press, and abolition of the Gear’s autocracy. The palaces are guarded and Moeoow students have been flogged with the knout. Now Zealand mutton stocks are increasing; there Is a fair demand. Canterbury mutton is worth 4jd per lb and Wellington 4fd per lb. The beef market is firmer. New Zealand beef—fore quarters are worth 4d and bind quarters 4}d.
