THE McLEOD CASE-AN OBSTINATE LAWYER. [SPBCIIL TO THE BTANDABD.j Napier, last night. Dr. John McLeod was brought up on remand yesterday morning, before Captain Preece, charged with attempted rape on Mary Ann Wilson at Woolharra, Naw South Wales. Inspector Kiely produced a warrant from New South Wales for the prisoner's arrest, and also a copy of the statutes of that colony. Constable Blackburn, from New South Wales produced a report of the charge against the prisoner and the certificate of the doctor who attended Mary Anu Wilson when suffering from the violence used towards her. Mr McLean, who appeared for prisoner, was about to cross-examine the witness, when Captain Preece asked him to apologise for expressions he used when the case was before the Court previously, on which occasion he characterised the proceedings as farcical, McLean said he considered he wae justified injuring that expression, and as he refused to retract it, Captain Preeoe adjourned the ease till this afternoon to give Mr McLean time to re-oonsider, or afford Dr McLeod an opportunity to procure another solicitor. On the case being resumed. Dr McLeod was undefended by counsel, and after some formal evidence had been taken was remanded to Sydney.

A SAD AFFAIR-A FOOLISH YOUNG MAN STRUCK DEAD.

An inquest was held yesterday at Aketoho, neat Herbertville, on the body of George Lunn, who was killed in a fracas last Monday. It appeared from the evidence that Lunn, who was a young fellow, aged 25, was skylarking with James Nolan, a white-haired man of 60, sparring up to him and worrying him. After thia had gone on some time Nolan struck Lunn with 4 stick and felled him to the ground. On the doctor arriving he found Lunn dead. The jury returned a verdict of manslaughter.
