Death of Mr S. Locke.

Ybstebday information was received from Auckland announcing the death of Mr S. Locke, formerly Parliamentary representative of the East Coast. Though Mr Locke had been in declining health for years past the end came more suddenly than was expected. Mr Locke’s name and genial parson were so familiar to nearly everyone who has had any connection with this district that a sketch of his life would be unnecessary. It is sufficient to say that by Intelligence, perseverance, and integrity, he won for himself the esteem of everyone who had any knowledge of his work. While in the House he was regarded at perhaps the highest and most reliable authority in native matters. Unfortunately for himself his knowledge was of that practical nature which none wonld envy, and he eventually had his prospects wrecked through unforeseen laweuita and other troubles. But though fortune had not favored him he still retained the sympathy and esteem of all who knew bin;, In polltioe, as in private life, there could not be a batter friend or fairer opponent than Mr Looks, and the news of his death will lend a pang Ot grkf to hundred! of hearts.
