H.B. EDUCATION BOARD.

(FROM oub own ocbbespondbnt.) Napier, last night. At the meeting of the Board of Education yesterday a letter from Gisborne recommending that the salary of Mr Mann be increased from £205 to £225 was deferred until tbe position of the High School fund had been ascertained, A letter was read from Waerenga-a-hika reporting that the attendance had been injuriously affected by typhoid, and urging that the assistant mistress be retained. The request was declined, as the attendance had fallen below the Board’s requirements for nine consecutive months.

The Board also refused to comply with a request from Wairoa to pay Miss Finlayson’s salary as pupil teacher, and decided that she be suspended until the attendance increased to the number required by the Board’s regulations. Mr Hornsby wrote declining to accept £lO 4s for bis son’s scholarship, and requiring £3O 4s as the sum to which his son was entitled.

The Inspector read a memorandum to the effect that £2O additional was only paid when the holder of a scholarship lived in the country and had come to town to attend the High School. As Mr Hornsby is now living in Napier be is not entitled to more than £lO 4s.

The Board decided to allow Mr Hornsby one week to decide whether he would accept the £lO 4s. After that time, unlesss the amount is accepted, the scholarship will be cancelled.

Mr Ormond was re-elected Chairman of the Board for the ensuing year. The Inspector submitted amended scholarship regulations, the consideration of which was deferred for a month.

The Chairman reported that Government had allotted £lOOO to Hawke’s Bay from the surplus building fund, and as tbe overdraft on the building account was £1,130 it would remain £l3O overdrawn.

It was decided, after considerable discussion, to expend £1,500 on buildings by increasing the overdraft to £lOBO, and taking £OOO from the general fund.
