FOOTBALL,
PAKEHAS V. MAORIS. Tana was a very good muster of players, as well as spectators, on the football field on Saturday afternoon, when the match played was between Pakehas and Maoris. The game throughout was fast and interesting, and considering that this was only about the second game of the season, the men played well together, though there is still very much room for improvement. From start to finish in both spells, the Pakehas bad it almoin all their own way, although the Maoris made some splendid rushes, by means of which they managed, in the second spell, to secure a welldeserved try, from which the skipper of the team failed to obtain a goal. Xu the first spell they woe sev< ral times forced- down by the Pakehas, for wuom Marshal) obtained a try, which Langford by a neat kick converted into a goal. The Pakehas also managed to force their opponents down two or three times in the second spell, but obtained no further score. The game thus resulted in a win for the Pakehas by 3 points to 1. Mr Bourn umpired for the Pakehas and Mr T. Morgan for the Maoris, Mr Trotter filling the position of referee, It is to be hoped that next Haturday will see another good match, whether scratch or o'herwiae, and also that players will on future occasions roll up punctually at the appointed time, as it discourages the attendance of spectators to have to wait for sometimes more then half an hour after time tor the game to start, and there can be no doubt that the fact of there being a large aiteodanoeof spectators adds very considerably to the interest which the majority of players Uwmsetves take in tbs gams.
