COLONIAL TELEGRAMS.

AUCKLAND. Last night. John Mercer, contractor, has died suddenly near Otorouhanga. A good deal of interest is being manifested in the School Committee elections which are proceeding to-night. A dispute has occurred between the Shipwrights’ Society and the Seamen’s Union and Mr Brown, and the latter are not employing non union men. Several settlers are coming from Victoria to take up land in the Waikato. The Government steamer Hinemoa, from the Kermadic group, has been signalled, and should reach port this evening. The Avondale Cup, run on Saturday, was won by Harrison’s Tamora, Pinfire being second, and Nigger third. The dividend was £l6. The B.M.S. Alameda arrived this afternoon from San Francisco, after a passage in which she made the fastest time on record. The passengers for Auckland were—Messrs Wilfred, Taylor, Burns, Sherman and wife, Cotterill and eleven steerage. She brings no news of any consequence.

SOUTHERN NEWS. Last night. The School Committee elections in Napier are being made a sort of political contest. George Gordon has been killed at Wellington through a quantity of timber falling on him. Government have communicated with the Agent General of the colony, defining the position of Mr Courtnay, who has been inducing certain immigrants to come to this colony. The N.Z. Shipping Co. and Shaw Saville and Albion Co. have reduced tbe freight of flax to London by 10s per ton. Dredging operations have entirely removed the shoal just inside the Dunedin Heads. There is now over 20feet of water at dead low water on tbe epot. William Appleyard, of New Plymouth, is supposed to have come in for a fortune of £20.000. The body of a mon 50 years of age was found hanging from his onthouse near Cavereham railway station. He was seen about halt an hour previously. William Kruse, settler at Brightwaler, Nelson, was riding on top of a load of straw, i when, on passing under the telegraph, the : wire line caught him and threw him down to

the ground with such force that he sustained severe internal injuries, ot which he died. Mr John Roberts, President ot the Dunedin Exhibition, was entertained st a Jubilee banquet, which was attended by about 200 persons. He has since placed his services at the disposal of any Beat desired by the electors, On the first of May butchers' meat in Wellington will be advanced from Jd to 2d per lb, according to the joint. This applies to both beef and mutton. News has been received at Napier of the discovery of tho dead body of Ernest Peter, on the bed of the Tutekauri river, below a cliff 30ft high. Deceased ie a son of the Hon. W. 8. Peter, of Ashburton, Canter, bury, and was visiting Hawke’s Bay with the object of purchasing country property. A boy named John Wright, two years of age, was accidentally drowned in the Waipawa river yesterday.
