A TRUMP CARD.

Mr Chambers has been successful in his opposition to the Kaiteratahi loan proposal. If, on principle, we cannot congratulate that gentleman on his success, the ratepayers perhaps can at least thank him for the instructive lesson which has been conveyed to them. Mr Chambers has been one of the most ardent supporters of the principle that the decision of the majority should have sway, and even in the greatest work the district has ever undertaken, he resolutely set his face against the objections of a large body of ratepayers; but now he has given good proof that obstruction can be converted into a sort of science. In connection with the proposed Kaiteratahi Bridge, there is, as is nearly always the case in regard to any work, a division of opinion as to the wisdom of its construction, but it has been reserved for the opponents of the proposed Kaiteratahi bridge to carry their opposition to such a length. We give them full credit for the belief 4hat they are acting for the best, but we are sorry that they did not take a better opportunity of showing it. As the matter now stands the Colonial Treasurer has been forced into meek submission by the threat from the opposing minority, and another poll cannot be taken until after the first of July, and all the expense gone to will have to be borne for no purpose.
