The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE. Published Every Tuesday, Thursday, AND Saturday Morning.

Saturday, Mat 3, 1890. VACANCIES IN LOCAL BODIES.

Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou alm’st at be thy Gauntry’s, Thy God's, and truth's.

At noon to-day nominations must be in for the selection of candidates to fill the vacant seat in the Harbor Board and the vacant seat in the Borough Council. Up to the present little or no interest has been taken in the subject, and as when it is everybody’s business to be concerned the old saying about its being deemed no one’s special business holds good. The names ofseveral candidates have been mentioned, but no one, so far as the public are aware, has definitely decided to allow himself to be nominated. There is of course time enough to make such an announcement, but when the names of candidates are known beforehand, and they do not happpen to be acceptable to any distinct section of ratepayers, that section has the privilege of announcing an opposition candidate, and so the views of the majority are almost certain to be represented. On the other hand when no mention is made of the names until the time for making further nominations has passed, whatever the result is it may not be satisfactory to very many people. We trust that the importance of the election in either case may not be overlooked. For the Harbor Board Mr Bright (manager of the local branch of the Loan and Mercantile Company) has been mentioned as a candidate. Speaking of Mr Bright personally we could hardly wish for a more capable person, and at the present juncture his knowledge in regard to finance would be of special value.
