TheN.Z.L. and M.A, Co., Limited, have received the following cablegram from their London House, dated 16th inat.Tallow: There is a less demand for floe mutton tallow, but there is an improved enquiry for other descriptions. Fine mutton tallow is worth 24s 9d per cwt; good beet tallow is worth 24s 3d. Frozen Meat : There is rather better demand tor New Zealand mutton. Canterbury mutton is worth 4Jd per lb; Wellington mutton is worth 4jd per lb. Beet market dull. N.Z. beef—forequarters are worth 3|il per lb ; hindquarters are worth 4|d per lb.

The Bank of New ZealandMr David Hean states that he will, on his return to London, submit hopeful proposals for dealing with the whole of the globo assets of the Bank of New Zealand. On the publication of Mr Hean’s report on the Bank of New Zealand the shares fell three-quarters, but are now steadier. The last quotations were— Old issue £5, new £B. The large shareholders met at the Bank, and agreed that it was desirable that an immediate transfer of the head office to London should be made, and that additional strong names should placed on the Board : also to write down capital by the ascertained deficiency and place the surplus value of sites and premises in the Colonies to the reserve fund. They also agreed that dividends should be confined to a moderate amount till a strong reserve fund has been formed, and that a meeting of shareholders be called to elect a new Board when Mr Hean returns to England. There was no approach to a panic, and the Directors were prepared to meet any emergency.

The Prime Minister’s Statement.

The Marquis of Salisbury, in reply to Lord Rosebery, said it was not true that Prince Bismarck had insisted on England joining the Triple Alliance, He added that the relations with Germany had been constantly of a friendly nature. Referring to the dispute with Portugal, he mentioned that parleying was not yet finished, but Portugal must take the consequences if she refused to recognise the freedom of the Zambesia and Shire Rivers.
