A PRAISEWORTHY APPOINTMENT.

We are not always in accord with the appointments made by the present Government, but if they were all as satisfactory as one of which word was received on Saturday, we could have nothing but praise for them. Mr H. Eyre Kenny, who is the senior member of the Bar in Gisborne, and who for a long time occupied the high position of District Judge (which he resigned) has been appointed Resident Magistrate and Warden of Wesport, whither he leaves on Friday next. To enlarge upon Mr Kenny’s superior qualifications for such a position would be a mere waste of words, and instead of keeping to the conventional method, which would make it the correct thing to congratulate Mr Kenny, we depart from that course, and extend our congratulations to Westport, the district that will have the benefit of Mr Kenny’s services.

Of course we cannot help feeling a sense of regret at Mr Kenny’s departure from Gisborne. He has in an unostentatious, but none the less laudable way, been a quiet worker in those little organisations—such as literary societies—which improve the intellectual condition of a community, and he has not been doing all this without securing for himself the unbounded respect of his fellow-citizens. His departure will therefore be regretted, though that regret will be lessened by the belief that Mr Kenny has received a good appointment.
