BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Borough Council met on Tuesday evening last. Present: The Mayor and Crs Lewis, Lucas. Hepburn, Coleman, Whinray, Taylor, and McLernon.

The Haiti Road Board wrote asking the Council to form sod drain the road leading along the Taruheru River, within the boundary of the road district.

The Mayor considered that any money the Council had to spare should be expended on the road leading to the breakwater. The Council were not in a position to undertake any new work, and he suggested that a reply be sent to that effect. Cr Coleman said that when the Council were retrenching all round they should not spend any money on unnecessary works. The motion was agreed to.

The Public Works Committee reported that they had ordered the repairs to the Taruheru footbridge be done by day labor, tbe cost of 'he same to form a claim upon the owners of the b.b Fanny. The Mayor referred to the schooner Opotiki, which also came in contact with the bridge, and he considered that a certain amount should be claimed on that vessel for the damage which she had Stine. This was getting a very serious matter. Whether the bridge would be as strong as formerly he did not know.

Cr Whinray said they had better knock the bridges down altogether. Cr Hepburn : And resort to the ferry business.

In reply to the Mayor the Overseer said the cost up to the present had been £l5 19s 3d, and it would take about £1 15s mote to complete the repairs to the bridge. He then particularised as to the damage done. Cr Lucas said be did not think they should make the cost public when the Council intended claiming for the amount of the damage. The Mayor said that made no difference whatever.

Cr Lucas : The claim should be for the total damage to the structure, not merely for the cost of repairs. Cr Coleman suggested that the matter be left in the hands of the Public Works Com inittee, as they could estimate the cost of tbe damage, and claim on the vessels for such amounts.

The question was then left in the hands 0! the committee.

Tbe Overseer made a general report, dealing with the footbridge and various small works. It was ordered that £1 5s be expended on the Derby Street fool pa' h and drain.
