The reduction in the cable tariff will probably begin in January next. Best mutton tallow is at 24s 6d to 25s in London. The steamer Ashleigh Brook, wrecked on Dassen Island, near Cape Town, was in ballast, and had no cargo on board. The Senate has rejected a motion by Mr Blain that England be requested to withdraw her warships and dismantle her forts in American waters.
The General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland merely censured the Rev. Dr Dodds, D.D., for his unguarded statements respecting the cardinal doctrines. The Kaikoura arrived at Plymouth with her passengers all well, and her cargo of frozen mutton in good condition. The Kaiser has summoned a conference of Trades Unions, and invites the advice of English delegates relative to the formation of an Operatives’ State Advisory. M. Rebut, Minister of Foreign Affairs, doubts the statement that a French warship had landed a party of marines at St. George’s Bay, Newfoundland, in order to force British fishermen to remove their nets. Mr Francis Abigail, of New South Wales, is arranging with the Ulster Loyalist Union to send delegates to Australia to try and counteract the results of the Home Rule mission.
A British warship has closed the British lobster factory in St. George’s Bay. Six* teen thousand colonial fisherman on the French shore havepetitioned Her Majesty the Queen on the matter. M. Rochfort allows that Boulangistn is now dormant in France, but says that friendship with Russia and Germany would ensure its revival.
Shares in the Bank of New Zealand have again declined in value. The Hussars drew their sabres and charged the crowds wthich gathered at the proclaimed meeting in the vicinity of Cashel. The police also used their batons furiously, striking Dillon and O’Brien, and injuring many others.
